Careers in the Game Industry

How do I get into the industry?

First of all, it’s probably easier to start with a brief run-down of jobs available within the industry.

  • Artist
Artists are usually hired based on folio and level of experience, and exactly what’s required can depend on the individual role. Generally a folio with a several well executed and relevant examples of your work is the best way to find work as an artist.
  • Designer
The designer constructs or co-ordinates the mechanical, parametric and high-level design of a game. Many designers have started their careers in other areas of game development e.g. programming, art or QA, or have writing, film or multimedia backgrounds. Designers need a strong communication ability, an interest in playing games and good problem solving skills.
  • Programmer
Programmers need to be experienced in C/C++, or Java (for handheld development). Again, programming roles vary greatly, but an in-depth understanding of mathematics and strong problem solving skills are important.
  • Producer
The producer is responsible for overseeing the technical, creative and design team, and to ensure that titles are completed to a high quality, on time and to budget.
  • Quality Assurance
There are no traditional career paths into QA, and often the work can be casual. Good communication and attention to detail are essential.
